Rita Review – Well Worth Solving

A cozy crossword adventure, SporkTank’s Rita features a tiny little chicklet and the biggest of puzzles.

See whether these creative word puzzles are worth solving with our review…

Rita Review

A story about Rita (it’s in the name!), Rita transports players to 1933 Aspendale as the newly hatched chicklet Rita.

With an affinity for the beach and word puzzles, Rita sets out to explore the world around here as its many different elements take form.

We mean that last part literally by the way.

By collecting letters and newspaper pages across Rita’s bright and colorful world, players can then solve crosswold puzzles that add ramps, friends, clocks, and additional items that lead to the bigger picture.

She even becomes a little bit of a local legend in said paper over time – credit where credit’s due!

Most of Rita’s crossword puzzles are admittedly pretty easy, but Rita’s interconnected world encourages exploration and thought. Everything in Rita connects to everyone (even its many pigs and donkeys), full of the “a-ha!” moments we so crave. Think of Rita almost as a MetroidVania, albeit with a different approach.

As players progress in Rita, additional concepts are introduced that include Memory World lessons (which do require more thought), different puzzle types, and a character swapping mechanic after a time skip (spoilers!).

Rita also features light platforming elements and minigames that keep things fresh. While far from a “git gud” platformer (no dying here!), players will no doubt enjoy taking part in races against the “World Championship Runner,” long jumps in the desert, and a healthy card game of Snap.

We got good at that last one!

We played Rita’s campaign with a keyboard and mouse setup without issue. That being said, Rita also features systems for just a keyboard and a controller. For those looking for help, Rita also features optional clue systems, along with accessibility options perfect for younger players.

A cozy puzzler with a hint of platforming, Rita’s charming crossword journey across generations is well worth solving.
