KuloNiku: Bowl Up! Interview – Gambir Studio Talks Characters, Community & More

A cozy cooking game that’s won our hearts (and stomachs!), Gambir Studio and Raw Fury’s KuloNiku: Bowl Up! has served up an Overwhelmingly Positive reception on Steam – over 1,100 reviews!

From characters to community, we recently chatted with Gambir Studio’s Raka and Gian to learn more about this signature dish…

KuloNiku: Bowl Up! Interview – Gambir Studio Talks Characters, Community & More

Gamers Heroes

From Ume to Stella, I loved each character’s personalities!

Whether it be anime, gaming, or anything else, what were some of the inspirations for its lively cast?

Raka (Project Manager & Story Writer)

Our inspirations include comedy anime like Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun

The characters have one easily understood and recognized personality trait as their foundation, which we can then expand upon.

We also threw in a dash of farming sim writing style, think Stardew Valley or Fields of Mistria, so you’ll see different sides of the characters as you get to know them.

We hope to make the players excited to learn more about the characters and how they became the people that they are now.

What has been your favorite part working with Raw Fury on KuloNiku: Bowl Up? I greatly appreciate what they bring to the gaming space!

Gian (Game Designer & Programmer)

Definitely the vast experience that they brought to the table.

They could share why a certain gameplay feature or story beat might work well for KuloNiku, and they have the data to back it up.

But that is not to say they’re detached; they are also gamers and would chime in with what additions might make the game even more fun to play.

So it’s been so wonderful to have both professional and personal opinions. And, of course, they trust us to make the final call.

Gamers Heroes

I love the KuloNiku: Bowl Up! fan art I’ve seen

From Twitter/X to Bluesky to Discord to even Reddit, what are some of your favorite community stories around this release?

Raka (Project Manager & Story Writer)

We’re so grateful to have such a passionate and awesome community!

It really makes our day when we see someone who likes KuloNiku enough that they recommend it to others on social media and forums.

It’s also been very fun reading the speculations and analyses about the characters in our Discord.

It means there’s enough, ahem, meat in the writing that people can really dig into.

And of course, all the fanworks in different styles!

Also talking Reddit, I saw you mentioned there will be “new dialogues and illustrations in April, new decoration sets in May, and a new cooking-related feature in June.”

I’m sure there’s a lot still under wraps, but what was the one thing you absolutely had to add post-launch?

Gian (Game Designer & Programmer)

We’re listening to what the community wants, and one theme is creating custom recipes. So we’re exploring ways to make that happen.

We also want to make Teto the cat a more important part of the game because… cats are great!

Gamers Heroes

Finally, I have to ask – from sweet to spicy, from grilled items to skewers, what’s your ideal order at Bakuso?

Gian (Game Designer & Programmer)

Slightly sweet and slightly spicy noodles with meatball and chicken, plus iced tea!

Raka (Project Manager & Story Writer)

Mine would be a slightly spicy and slightly salty Classic Bowl, with lamb skewer on the side and a glass of ice tea.

Don’t forget the spoon and fork!
