Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo Preview – Electric Triangle

In what could be the first “Yoyovania,” Pocket Trap and PM Studios’ Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo is set to deliver a grand top-down adventure when it launches next month.

Packing one’s trusty yo-yo at their side, see what’s to come as players go around the world in Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo with our preview.

Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo Preview – Electric Triangle

Set in the charged (in more ways than one) New Jolt City, the titular Pipistrello Industries runs this town with its sheer power. Channeling the energy of the Wild Dequinellia flower, they have a monopoly on things.

Unfortunately, some cityfolk aren’t too kind too keen about this arrangement; hitting HQ, four distraught business owners steal the soul energy from Madame Pipistrello, channeling it into four Mega-Batteries.

Enter Pippit, a yoyo champion who wants nothing more than to live off his family’s great riches. With their aunt (the aforementioned Madame) relegated to a cursed yo-yo, this hero sets out to do his family name justice and perform some sweet tricks as he gets back the four Mega Batteries.

Played from a top-down perspective (think The Legend of Zelda, right down to the hearts), Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo has players defeating enemies, collecting keys, and bettering one’s self through badges and other refinements.

Of course, Pippt has the skills needed to get the job done. Said yo-yo skills come in handy, letting our hero hit switches, take potshots at angles, and even adjust batteries. Betterment and self-improvement can also be an option as players sneak through sewers, police stations, and shopping malls, giving players to equip badges (and refine said badges) and learn new abilities like the Offswing Throw, Charge Attack, Parry, and (our favorite) Walking the Dog.

Just be warned that Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo brings a challenge. Enemies come in large numbers, and there are rooms where players are locked in with over a dozen foes at any given time. Pattern recognition and getting good definitely factor into things, but players best bring their A-game and get ready to throw down in this title.

Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo Preview intentionally channels the best parts of the Game Boy Advance era of video games – something we couldn’t get enough of.

From the incredibly detailed pixel art to the charm of its cast and crew to even the gobbledygook city denizens yammer on about (we weren’t really casing houses, honest!), Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo feels like a long-lost classic just begging to be obsessed over.

The sheer creativity and charm proudly on display in Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo make us want to go around the world with the full release of this top-down adventure.

The full release of Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo will come out for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC on May 28. A demo is now available as well!

Thank you to PR for giving us the chance to preview Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo!
