See whether Big Walk walks the walk with our review…
Big Walk Review
Big Walk is about three things: friends, puzzles, and walking.
Don’t expect a story in Big Walk; this title instead just focuses on everyone going around a big island solving puzzles.
As the title suggests, almost all of Big Walk’s puzzles involve walking – and then walking some more.
It’s important to trust your friend to guide you to complete the puzzle, or inevitably wait for them to troll you and let you tumble off a cliff.
Be warned: Get ready for this game to test your patience…
We’ll preface things by saying Big Walk’s puzzles themselves are very creative and clever.
Sometimes they are as simple as picking one’s buddy up and having them hit a button. Others have guys separated, with players each given different parts of a password.
All puzzles in Big Walk involve walking and communicating (hence the name), proving to be simply yet challenging. Most also give players a chance to troll.
We won’t judge…
When beating a puzzle in Big Walk, players will get a little statue that needs to put into a pedestal. Once enough statues are put into place, players will then get a key.
From there, players will then grind that key down until it fits the key slot, then moving on to the next area.
While Big Walk’s first spot is pretty linear, the game really opens up after that. The loop is still the same, but it gets a little easier each time one gets a new key.
While most of Big Walk’s main progression is through its puzzles, players are also encouraged to explore and even get lost.
A map someone can hold can eventually be found, but players will need to orient themselves first – and it isn’t easy.
The other downside in Big Walk is that players can only hold one item to start, but findable backpacks and additional items can be discovered later to hold more things. Almost every direction in Big Walk features a way of progression – as long as you are willing to take the Big Walk.
At the start of the game, it is highly recommended that you only use Big Walk voice chat to talk; it’s part of the game.
That being said, this system makes the puzzles more challenging due to voice distances and other factors. One of the puzzles has players guiding their blind teammate to match symbols in a room you can’t get into.
Because said ally has something on their head and there is glass in the way, the jacked up hearing makes things far more challenging.
And that’s just one example…
We have a hunch a lot of people will use Discord or party chat during their time with Big Walk.
Besides local voice, Big Walk also features a number of other tools to communicate as well that include walkie-talkies, flare guns, lights, and even signboards.
However, it is very easy to get lost in Big Walk due to the lack of map markers. In addition, players cannot see each other’s names; even when right on top of each other.
For those looking for the hardcore Big Walk experience, the in-game tools will certainly provide that.
Big Walk has also been designed as a game for streaming and clips. With all of this walking, players can interact with the chat quite a bit.
There are a number of ways to troll people in Big Walk, including kicking items into the ocean or carrying them off a cliff.
When you have 12 people playing Big Walk, expect sheer chaos.
While Big Walk features a day-night cycle, nighttime really sucks without a light and simply wasn’t fun.
The floor in Big Walk also isn’t very even, with players often caught up on ledges and rocks while walking off the path. One can try to jump, but that leads to players often getting stuck – so you have to go backward and then jump over whatever it is you are stuck on.
It happens a lot.
I also cannot stress this enough: If you dislike walking simulators, Big Walk’s gratuitous backtracking isn’t for you.
Big Walk does feature a few frame drops, getting surprisingly frame-y in places multiple times in the woods. While we only had two people in this instance, it could very well be worse with additional players.
While Big Walk could very well be someone’s Game of the Year, most people will likely get burnt out by its backtracking and voice chat system.
