Sac Gamers Expo 2025 Welcomes Special Guest Joe Cain

Featuring more than 30 years of video game industry experience, game/level designer, producer, and former SEGA of America lead/general tester Joe Cain will be a Guest of Honor at Sac Gamers Expo 2025 this December.

Joe Cain packs an impressive resume, previously working at SEGA of America, Atari, The 3DO Company, Digital Eclipse, Electronic Arts, App Ant Studios, GREE, IGT, and iWin. 

For fans of old-school cool, Joe Cain was also the lead/general tester on more than 40 SEGA Genesis classics! 

Titles he had a major hand in include Ecco the Dolphin, Ecco: The Tides of Time, Eternal Champions, Disney’s Aladdin, X-Men, X-Men 2: Clone Wars, Sonic the Hedgehog: Spinball, Sonic & Knuckles, Taz in Escape From Mars, Shadowrun, Jurassic Park: Rampage Edition, Streets of Rage 3, and more!

iam8bit 20th Anniversary Art Show in LA Happening November 8-9

Paying tribute to the golden age of games, the iam8bit 20th Anniversary Art Show gallery exhibition will happen in LA from November 8-9.

More than 70 renowned artists will exhibit at the iam8bit 20th Anniversary Art Show in LA.

Scope out the highlights below:

  • Alex Pardee – is An LA-based artist, illustrator and apparel designer, Alex Pardee designed the artwork for Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch. He utilizes a distinctive “brightmares” aesthetic that fuses together cute and horrific elements. What follows are vivid, nightmarish creations that have been inspired by horror movies, pop art, and graffiti.
  • Cobcris – Cobcris’ work blends still images with claymation-style animation, crafting surreal, tactile worlds that feel hand-built and alive. Expect a meld of digital artistry with analog charm!
  • Drew Wise – An artist and illustrator, Drew Wise’s bold, graphic sensibility bridges pixel art and modern design. Drew Wise’s work has appeared in iam8bit gallery shows, along with official game and soundtrack collaborations.
  • Hayden Evans – Hayden Evans’ work blends together mid-century flair with irreverent charm to celebrate pop culture icons, His vibrant illustrations set out to combine nostalgic design language with contemporary wit and warmth.
  • Johana Molina – An award-winning illustrator and animator, Johana Molina’s ethereal digital compositions explore memory, place, and time. His work has previously appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, and international exhibitions.
  • Keita Takahashi – The acclaimed creator of the Katamari Damacy series, Wattam and To a T, Keita Takahashi’s whimsical and genre-defying style blends together playfulness with emotional depth and heartwarming themes. 
  • Lee Gatlin – An illustrator and cartoonist, Lee Gatlin’s introspective comics and pop-culture homages blend humor and poignancy. His recent work includes contributions to Amazing Spider-Man #50 (Marvel, 2024).
  • Luke Chueh – A pop-surrealist painter celebrated for juxtaposing cute, cartoonish figures with dark emotional undertones, Luke Chueh’s instantly recognizable characters have appeared in international galleries and have inspired a generation of designer-toy artists.
  • Mark Borgions – An award-winning designer, Mark Borgions’ distinct visual style blends together bold graphics and surreal humor. Mark Borgions’ charming illustrations are the cover art for iam8bit’s Joystick Jazz collection, featuring jazz versions of videogame soundtracks.  
  • Maya Quintero – Maya Quintero’s work channels a visceral intimacy, one that blends figurative forms with gestural abstraction and color that is charged with emotion. Maya Quintero’s images often feel like moments suspended between vulnerability and strength.
  • Natalie Andrewson – An illustrator, comics artist, and Risograph printmaker, Natalie Andrewson is known for The Nutcracker and the Mouse King: The Graphic Novel. Natalie Andrewson’s narrative artwork captures intimate worlds through expressive color and texture.
  • Paul Robertson – The acclaimed pixel-art animator behind Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game, Mercenary Kings, and TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge, Paul Robertson’s intricate pixel worlds helped define the visual language of modern indie games.
  • Rex Crowle – A BAFTA-winning creative director and artist known for Tearaway, LittleBigPlanet, and Knights and Bikes, Rex Crowle’s whimsical, handcrafted aesthetic bridges together illustration, animation, and interactive storytelling.
  • Scott Campbell – An illustrator, author, and former Double Fine art director (Psychonauts, Brütal Legend), Scot Campbell is the creator of the beloved Great Showdowns series. Put simply, Scott Campbell’s work radiates warmth, humor and heart.
  • Tara Billinger – An Emmy-winning art director and character designer known for Disney TV’s Mickey Mouse shorts and co-creator of Long Gone Gulch, Tara Billinger’s animation work blends together vintage aesthetics with bold modern energy.

Jon M. Gibson, co-owner and co-creative director of iam8bit, said the following:

“This show has been a real labor of love from the entire team at iam8bit and the artists who helped bring it to life.

It was extremely important for us to do something that called back to our roots as a company. 

20 years after we started, we’re just as passionate today about showcasing how special video games can be as a pop culture art form.”

Dispatch puts the spotlight Mecha Man, aka Robert Robertson.

Yes, the game makes fun of that name.

Starting with Robert interrogating a goon, Dispatch puts players on the hunt for the Villain Shroud.

As it turns out, Shroud killed Robert’s dad – it only makes sense he wants a bit of revenge. Gathering the intel he needs, Robert hops into his Mech and becomes Mecha Man.

To be crystal clear, this isn’t some lame-ass Iron Man armor; Mecha Man is made of space marine power armor.

It’s big, it’s bulky, and its intimidating.

Once players find Shroud, they find out it was a trap, with him completely destroying your Mech.

Forced to retire, players will run into fellow superhero Blonde Blazer.

As it turns out, she has a job offer for you, with one’s Mech repaired upon completion – and one’s hero status restored.

The job is simple: dispatch heroes to problem areas and have them deal with it.

While a simple job on paper, players quickly discover the previous dispatcher only lasted two days on the job – and the one before that also quit abruptly.

As luck would have it, players are assigned to the Z team: A group of former Villains that swapped over to the Hero side. While it presents itself as a rehabilitation program for the baddies, they still have nasty attitudes.

Hazing, trolling, harassment – one will succumb to the entire gambit before the first couple Dispatch episodes are done.

Dispatch’s gameplay shines when it comes to one’s job. After sitting down, a map of the city pops up alongside all of one’s hero’s stats and abilities.

Some jobs take speed, while others take charisma – and so on and so forth.

Dispatch will have players putting the right hero on the right job to maximize points. Success nets EXP and one can then level these heroes up to make them stronger and more reliable.

However, if they fail, they get hurt – and two failures gets them off the clock.

When it came time to assemble our Dispatch team, we recruited a big scientist bat, a carnival strongman, a fire guy (but of course), a demon, an invisible girl, a golem, a hip hop artist, and a former merc turned knife enthusiast.

Despite the constant ribbing, most surprisingly got the job done – even with the aforementioned attitude.

We thought things were under control, until after the first shift Invisigirl went rogue. She then proceeded to disobey orders, harm a civilian, and let the bad guy get away.

On that note, Dispatch’s voice acting is at the top of its class.

One would expect stellar voice acting work with both star power and Critical Role backing it, but Dispatch’s excellent delivery truly brings things home.

While story can prove to be hit-and-miss outside the Robert Robertson stuff, Dispatch makes you really feel the heart and soul in each of its characters.

As an added perk, Dispatch lets players turn off its quick time events – we took advantage of this after the first episode.

We expected our first Dispatch day to be an easy one, but we found ourselves called into the boss’ office. As it turns out, despite a good shift, there isn’t enough fear on the team.

If these former Villains feel like they can do whatever they want, then they will do whatever they want.

A change has to be made if this program is going to work – but that’s a problem for Dispatch’s next episode.

As of this review, Dispatch presents the dilemma all episodic games pose: We’re all too eager to play more, but have to patiently wait for the other episodes to release. While we thoroughly enjoy Dispatch’s gameplay and story, its cliffhangers will have you desperately begging for the rest of its content.

The Sandbox Halloween Celebration Launching October 31

Just in time for Halloween, The Sandbox will launch a special Haunted Mansion gaming experience October 31.

Haunted Mansion Experience

The aforementioned Haunted Mansion experience will trap players inside the walls of a spooky mansion.

As players set out to find the keys, unlock the right door, and escape, they’ll have to contend with the route changing every time they play.

The Haunted Mansion in The Sandbox hides countless secrets for those brave enough to explore.

Do be warned that something terrifying stalks its corridors, hunting players as they search – a trailer will be released soon! 

Halloween Social Challenge

One can take on a special 24-hour social challenge on October 31.

Tied to players’ Alpha Season 6 progress, players will be able to get up close to monsters, snap a photo, and share on socials via the Alpha Season 6 link page. 

On October 31 only, rewards are boosted to 100 EP – that’s five times the usual amount!

Trick or Treat Owner Rewards 

Owner Rewards in The Sandbox will also now be distributed seasonally, starting with a special Halloween drop for Alpha Season 6. 

Note that all eligible Avatar Owners will receive a Haunted Lantern, while LAND Owners will receive a Haunted tree.
